CRy-Baby: A comedic self-portrait that explores the connections between space, my past, and my future self.
Tuesday, January 30 – Friday, March 1, 2024
Lecture: Wednesday, February 7, 2-3 pm
Opening Reception - Wednesday, February 7, 3-5 pm
As you approach, you notice a vast, 200’ grass-fringed umbilical cord growing larger and larger, making both you and the buildings it's connected to appear minuscule. Three structures are tied together, with the smallest one resembling a fetus in a steel and concrete womb. The cord winds through the courtyard, twisting and turning, penetrating the gallery.
Through palm leaves, the gallery emits a gentle glow. You enter a cave-like space and observe the surroundings, which are both strange and alluring. Stuffed and beaded figures play and struggle on a surreal landscape of corn kernel carpets and shingled mountains. Lace curtains hang, nary the windows. Nonsensically, a 10-foot baby monitor emits military chatter. Memoric dioramas swirl, settling into dramatic domestic stagings of obstacle-turned-opportunity.
In this topsy-turvy world, you are in another's dream and don't want to wake up. Stay and linger as you absorb this land of Monumental Maternalism.

What to expect in Humboldt: Think time travel back to the 70s, where pot-growing hippies roll down from the hill in their Subarus on their way to yoga or the Coop. Trade in your heels for a pair of Birks, and hit the Saturday Farmer’s Market on the Arcata Plaza. Feel dwarfed hiking under the canopy of the giant redwoods. Take a dip in one of the untamed So Hum rivers. Explore one of the many rugged beaches of the coast. Experience the freedom of spending less time in the mirror and more time in nature.
